Dissertation

A wealth of studies has shown how vital status competition (competition for prestige, glory) was for elite males in Mid-Republican Rome (264-133 BCE). Such competition lay behind and was the impetus for many elite male actions. If it was so vital to elite men, did it also motivate elite women? A few previous studies have identified the presence of status competition among elite women, but hitherto not one study addresses this phenomenon directly and exclusively. I take this lacuna as my point of departure. In my dissertation, I investigate the evidence for elite female status competition in Mid-Republican Rome.

The aims of my dissertation are to investigate the contours and permutations of elite female status competition in Mid-Republican Rome, and to consider several manifestations of elite female social position and status. The purposes of the dissertation are to fill a gender gap in the scholarship on status competition and to enrich scholarly understanding of elite female lives.
