For more than a decade, Swedish archaeologists and Cuban archaeologists, anthropologists and historians have been conducting the project "World Crisis from Below". In the project, material and intangible traces of the Missile crisis (October 1962) have been documented and studied with new eyes. These include the remains of Soviet bases for strategic nuclear weapons and the everyday stories of the locals in the Cuban countryside: eyewitnesses who experienced the crisis on the first parquet.

The missile crisis's course of events and military strategic significance during the Cold War have been well-researched by historians. However, the material and intangible dimensions with which the project is working have been previously neglected as a consequence of the constant retelling of the general history of the crisis. The project therefore contributes with small-scale stories from below that complement, contrast and challenge this "dominant story".

The project's results have previously been presented in a large number of books and articles, but in November, for the first time, the story of the project in the form of the exhibition Los Rastros de una crisis mundial is shown. The unique exhibition on the Missile Crisis and contemporary archaeological work will be on display from November 1-29 at the Instituto Cubano de Anthropología, Amargura # 203 e / Habana y, Aguiar, Havana, Cuba.

Professor Håkan Karlsson, a researcher at the Center for Critical Heritage Studies and active at the Department of Historical Studies at the University of Gothenburg, is one of the project's leaders. The exhibition in Cuba has been designed together with the Västergötland Museum in Skara.

- It is extremely fun to showcase the project and our results for the first time in the form of an exhibition, and it is amazing how the Västergötland Museum has been able to produce such an audience-friendly exhibition, says Håkan Karlsson. It is also nice that Sweden and Swedish archaeological research are represented in connection with Havana's 500th anniversary, says Håkan Karlsson.

The missile crisis threatened the entire world, but Cuba was its epicenter, so it is natural that the exhibition is in Havana and will benefit the Cuban audience, Karlsson concludes.

The exhibition is a collaboration between many actors:
Department of Historical Studies, University of Gothenburg
