The Decline of Bronze Age Societies: Cyprus and Beyond

Konferens

Background
The planned conference "The Decline of Bronze Age Societies: Cyprus and Beyond" is an essential part of the VR-project 2015-01192, "The Collapse of Bronze Age Societies in the Eastern Mediterranean: Sea Peoples in Cyprus". Thus far, the project has resulted in significant publications including conference proceedings, a monograph and articles in international high-ranking journals.

Aims and Methods
The analysis and evaluation of new material from ongoing excavations permit further insights to the main aim of the project: Why did the sophisticated, highly interconnected, Bronze Age societies of the eastern Mediterranean wane around 1200 BCE? Due to its location in the centre of the region Cyprus plays a crucial role in understanding the "Sea Peoples Phenomenon", which summarises the effect of migrations and political, economic and climatological changes. The multifaceted approach combines archaeological, historical and numerous scientific methods from an intra-island perspective extending towards a supra-regional understanding of phenomena of general decline.

Output
The conference offers a unique opportunity to gather specialised Swedish and foreign scholars at the University of Gothenburg, which has played a pivotal role in the formation of Cypriot archaeology. Therefore, the conference will strengthen the research networks between Swedish and international scholars and institutions. The outcomes of the conference will be published.
