Flower in the Garbage: Material Evidences of Prostitution in Tehran, 2017-2018

Regarding the decreasing rate of income due to currency drop, the increase of poverty and changing supportive traditions because of oil economy, many young women have to work as sex workers in Tehran. Before, till 1990s, the red districts of the city were obviously specified but after several currency drops of 2000s, prostitutes were scattered all over the city.

During a garbage project in Tehran in 2017-18, we found the material traces of prostitution among the daily garbage. More investigations presented the relation between these sexual workers and the individuals from middle classes who have lost their normative social attitudes and were forced to change their neighborhood to southern part of the city where is traditionally recognized as the places occupied by low-income statues. In this lecture, I will present the changing patterns of prostitution regarding the material found in the garbage disposals.
