Master's Studies (Second Cycle)

General information

A degree in the Second Cycle normally takes one year (60 Higher Education Credits, HEC) or two years (120 HEC). To be eligible to take courses in this cycle, you must first have completed the First Cycle. The entrance requirements for a programme in the Second Cycle include a degree from the First Cycle (180 HEC) or equivalent.

In order to be granted a spot on a Second Cycle programme, you must also satisfy certain specific eligibility requirements. However, in order to take single subject courses in the Second Cycle, you do not need a First Cycle degree, if you satisfy the specific eligibility requirements for the particular course for which you are applying.

At least 60 HEC at the Second Cycle (Master of Arts, one year) is required in order to apply for doctoral studies.

Special Programs

The Department of Historical Studies also offers programmes that are aimed at specific areas of archaeological activity. As of the autumn term 2007, students can be accepted to the programme, "Cultural Heritage and Modernity: Material and Immaterial over 1000 years". The programme has been developed in order to provide good possibilities of employment within the cultural heritage sector, in museums, county administration, and heritage boards.
